Clyde

Incorporated July 9, 1907, Clyde was named after a man who worked on the railroad and ran a small store for railroad workers and town folk. The first settler in Clyde was R.J. Estes in 1876. Other settlers were a group of Portuguese who planned to grow grapes and run a winery. They elected their own king and had their own government. Other early settlers included Kuykendalls, Paylors, Estes, Kleppers, and Baxters. The Baxters were the first family to live in the railroad section foreman's house built in 1900. Mary Ann Baxter Wallace, the daughter planted a pecan tree that was grafted by Mr. Burkett who also lived in Clyde. The tree, which is approximately 85 years old, is still in the yard and bears Burkett pecans. The Railroad Section Foreman's house has been restored to its original condition and currently houses the office of the Clyde Chamber of Commerce.
