Originally a the city was known as Ranger Camp Valley. The Texas and Pacific Railroad arrived in 1880. The Discover Well, McCleskey No. 1, blew in October of 1917 producing over 1,700 barrels per day. Ranger was changed overnight from a sleepy town of several hundred to a thriving city of over 30,000. A visit to Ranger should include a tour of the Roaring Ranger Oil Boom Museum and a trip to the original McCleskey No. 1 Well Site (an authentic 84-foot replica wooden derrick over the original bore site is in future plans to be raised again after being blown down Feb. 9, 2001).
